Getting your inventory listed on Craigslist is one of the most profitable ways to advertise your cars. It's proven that car buyers on Craigslist tend to convert much quicker than on any other classifieds. The conversion rate on Craigslist can be as high as 10%, and that's huge.
Use strong language: Use strong language that creates a sense of urgency or excitement, such as "amazing deals" or "limited-time offers." Include a call to action: Encourage the recipient to visit your showroom or call your dealership to schedule a test drive.
Avoid adding any personal information in the posting, including your name, real phone number or real email address. Always use the generated email address on your Craigslist posts.
When shouldn't I give out my VIN? You shouldn't include your VIN on any public listings or advertisements, such as Craigslist, Autotrader or eBay. This can leave you especially vulnerable to the practice of VIN cloning (see more from Rig Dig here).
Experts agree that the common rule of thumb on mileage for a used vehicle is roughly 12,000 miles added for each year of ownership. That means, for example, good mileage for a used vehicle that's five years old would be around 60,000 miles.
1. Failing to do proper research ahead. Don't walk into a dealership without information. You multiply your chances of stumbling into a car and a transaction that is not right for you, and you leave yourself wide open to a salesperson who is equipped to take advantage of you.
Explain that you're looking for the lowest markup over your bottom price. As an alternative, ask whether the salesperson is willing to beat a price you got from a legitimate buying service. If so, tell the salesperson what it is, or better yet, show them a printout. Try not to be argumentative.
Warning signs in listings and communications. Too-good-to-be-true prices: If a listing offers an item at a price significantly lower than its market value, proceed with caution. Scammers often use unbelievably low prices as bait.
Request cash payment when exchanging in person. If you're shipping your item, use a service such as PayPal for more security. Never accept a money order; this is usually a scam. Cashier's checks can be forged, so exercise caution when accepting these.
