Nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, known for her work with Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor, recently took to Instagram on January 3rd to share insights about traditional Indian foods that can significantly help in keeping us warm when temperatures drop.
As the winter chill sets in, it impacts not only our comfort but also essential bodily functions like digestion, metabolism, energy levels, and immune response. While bundling up and enjoying steaming beverages bring immediate warmth, what we consume plays a crucial role in enhancing our body’s resilience against the cold.
Rujuta pointed out that winter meals should ideally include a mix of grains, lentils, and vibrant vegetables, emphasizing the nutritional benefits of seasonal greens. She shared comforting examples from various regional diets across India, stating, "Bajra bhakri served with loni (a type of white butter), arshi chai chutney made from flaxseed, mandua ka roti, kulith ka paratha, and gehat ki dal are all excellent choices that keep you warm during the winter months."
Additionally, she highlighted a special green vegetable commonly consumed during this season, known as cholai, which contributes to the overall nutrition needed to thrive in winter.
But there's more to enduring the cold than just food – Rujuta conveyed a valuable life lesson about mindset that she learned from a wise elder. Reflecting on a story, she recounted how the grandfather encouraged his grandchild, who was feeling cold, to embrace the cold rather than shy away from it. The grandfather advised, "Tum thand ko pakdo" (Catch the cold), prompting the child to stand with an open chest, which symbolically illustrated how attitude can influence our experience of discomfort.
From this anecdote, Rujuta underlined that our mental resilience and outlook are just as important as our dietary choices. She noted, "In North India, there's a wonderful concept of jugaad, which represents clever and practical solutions to challenges. It’s not solely about the food we eat; our attitude towards the circumstances we face plays a critical role in our well-being."
