Alex Bregman, a free agent, is a prime target for Boston, who are hoping to bring him back into the fold. Adding him to the roster, along with trade acquisition Willson Contreras, would inject a right-handed bat, solid defense, and years of experience into the Red Sox's lineup. Bregman's previous stint with the team proved his value, showcasing how well he meshed with the club.
But here's where it gets controversial... the Red Sox aren't the only ones vying for the two-time World Series champion. According to MLB insider Mark Feinsand, the Toronto Blue Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks are aggressively pursuing Bregman's services. This news could be a major blow to Boston's plans.
And this is the part most people miss: While a reunion with Boston remains a possibility, many fans believe it should be the only option. The Red Sox have yet to sign a major league free agent this offseason, and they traded Rafael Devers last season to make room for Bregman. Letting Bregman walk after making that move would be a tough pill to swallow.
The Blue Jays and Diamondbacks each have compelling arguments to lure Bregman to their teams. Both teams compete in highly competitive divisions and have made recent World Series appearances. The Blue Jays, for example, have shown a strong commitment to winning, signing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a 14-year, $500 million extension and Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million deal.
Bregman signing with a division rival like Toronto would be a disaster for the Red Sox, as they would face him in four series per year for the duration of his contract. Even if he were to sign with another team, it would be a disappointment considering the Devers trade, the promises made during the offseason, and his fit with the club last season.
The Red Sox will need to step up their game if they want to secure a top free agent. Their reluctance to spend money won't cut it, especially in the AL East, where teams like the Blue Jays and Orioles are flexing their financial muscles.
