Life on Mars Returning? Co-Creator Teases Revival After 15 Years! (Doctor Who Villain Connection) (2026)

Get ready to rewind! The iconic BBC series featuring a Doctor Who villain may be gearing up for a comeback after a 15-year hiatus. This is huge news for fans of the show that was a massive hit back in the 2000s.

Premiering in 2006, Life on Mars captivated audiences with its unique blend of genres. The story follows Sam Tyler, a Manchester police officer in 2006, who, after a car accident, finds himself transported back to 1973. Imagine waking up in the past!

Once in the past, Sam continues his police work, but now under the command of Detective Chief Inspector Gene Hunt. The core mystery revolves around Sam's situation: how did he get here, and how can he get back?

The series starred John Simm, known for his role as The Master in Doctor Who, and Philip Glenister as the memorable Hunt. It was widely praised for its ability to weave science fiction with the familiar drama of a police procedural.

Sadly, the original run of Life on Mars ended abruptly in 2007 after just two seasons and 16 episodes. But the story didn't end there! Glenister reprised his role as Chief Inspector Hunt in the spin-off Ashes to Ashes, named, like the original, after a David Bowie song.

Ashes to Ashes had three seasons and featured Keeley Hawes as London officer Alex Drake, who wakes up in 1981 after being shot. Like Sam, Alex must navigate the past to find her way back to the future.

Now, here's where it gets interesting. According to Life on Mars co-creator Ashley Pharoah, a third series might be in the works! A new installment, titled Lazarus, was planned in recent years, but was put on hold in 2023 due to financial challenges.

However, Ashley has hinted that the project could be revived. He told The Sun newspaper: "Something is stirring in the Life on Mars world... the Cortina isn’t ready for the scrapyard just yet." He also mentioned that the team was puzzled that Lazarus wasn't greenlit, as fans were eager for it.

But here's a twist: Despite the co-creator's comments, the BBC has stated that there are no plans to bring Life on Mars back.

In 2023, co-creator Matthew Graham shared the news on Twitter that Lazarus was shelved, citing financial hurdles. He emphasized that the concept was strong and relevant to the times.

So, what do you think? Are you excited about the potential return of Life on Mars? Do you think the show's unique blend of genres still resonates with audiences today? Share your thoughts in the comments!
