"Keep dancing with that joyful spirit!" This encouraging advice comes from Tom Seickell, the former physical education instructor of Karen Carney, an esteemed English footballer, as she made her way to the finals of Strictly Come Dancing this past Saturday.
Tom Seickell taught Carney during her time at St Peter's Catholic School in Solihull, where he witnessed her remarkable determination even as a young student. He fondly recalls, "It has been slightly over two decades since I last taught her, but Karen was an exceptional, kind-hearted, and dedicated student. She truly poured her heart and soul into everything she undertook, which is evident not only in her dance performances but also in her academic pursuits while she was at school."
In the latest competition, Carney and her partner Carlos Gu shone brightly, achieving an impressive score of 78 out of a maximum of 80 points for their heartfelt Waltz and vibrant Samba routines.
Reflecting on her journey throughout the dance contest, Mr. Seickell expressed admiration for her evolution as a performer. "At the beginning of the season, who would have imagined she'd reach such heights? She has truly exceeded expectations!" he remarked.
Long before women’s football gained the popularity it enjoys today, Mr. Seickell highlighted Carney's role as a trailblazer for girls' football during her time at school. "She would be the first to acknowledge that the opportunities available to her back then were quite limited.
"Karen was incredibly gifted when it came to football; her passion for the sport was undeniable... it was clear she was destined for remarkable achievements."
Carney holds the distinction of being England's third-most capped player, with participation in four World Cups, four European Championships, and the London Olympics prior to her retirement in 2019. Additionally, she played for notable clubs such as Birmingham City, Chelsea, and Arsenal.
Mr. Seickell emphasized that her talents extend beyond the football field, showcasing her skills on the dance floor as well. "Of course, we hope all dancers perform flawlessly, but she has been absolutely fantastic throughout the competition.
"It's astonishing to witness her transformation into a dancer—who would have predicted that Karen Carney would grace national television as a dancer, looking completely at ease in this new role?
"Let’s keep our fingers crossed that she will lift the glitter ball trophy next Saturday!"
