FNAF 2 Box Office Smash: $63M Tops Zootopia 2 & Horror Hits 2024 (2026)

Sequels are proving to be the surprise stars of the holiday season, with 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2' leading the charge at the box office! This year, Hollywood seems to have found a winning formula: give the people what they already love, but with a fresh twist. Let's dive into the details of this cinematic success story.

Universal Pictures' 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2,' the highly anticipated follow-up, clawed its way to the top spot, surpassing even Disney's 'Zootopia 2.' The video game adaptation raked in an estimated $63 million domestically.

And this is the part most people miss... the film even exceeded initial projections, which estimated earnings of up to $55 million. The first 'Freddy's' film, based on the jump-scare-filled video game series, debuted in 2023 with a whopping $80 million and ultimately grossed $137.3 million domestically, making it the highest-grossing horror movie of that year. Talk about a successful franchise!

'Zootopia 2' secured the second position this weekend, earning $43 million, bringing its domestic gross to approximately $220 million since its opening last weekend.

'After a tough October for box office numbers, this is exactly the kind of boost movie theaters needed to kick off December,' noted Paul Dergarabedian from Comscore.

Universal Pictures' 'Wicked: For Good,' the sequel to last year's blockbuster, claimed third place with $16.75 million. The musical fantasy film is fast approaching $300 million at the domestic box office.

But here's where it gets controversial... it's not just sequels that are drawing crowds. The horror genre is also experiencing a surge in popularity this year, with films like Warner Bros. Pictures' 'Sinners,' 'The Conjuring: Last Rites,' and 'Weapons,' alongside Universal's 'Black Phone 2' and Sony Pictures' '28 Years Later.'

According to David A. Gross, the total earnings for horror titles this year could reach $2.65 billion, representing roughly 14% of Hollywood's global revenue. This is a significant figure!

Rounding out the top five, we have 'Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution,' a compilation from GKids, which kicked off its third season, earning $10.15 million. Shawn Robbins from Fandango suggests that this compilation format could be easier for new viewers to enjoy.

Lionsgate Films' 'Now You See Me: Now You Don't,' the third installment of the heist film series, came in fifth with $3.5 million. Quentin Tarantino's revenge saga, 'Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair,' followed in sixth place, earning $3.25 million.

'This is one of the most eclectic movie marketplaces I've ever seen,' Dergarabedian observed.

This weekend's earnings totaled a better-than-expected $154 million domestically, according to Comscore. This is a promising sign for the final month of the year, as Hollywood hopes to reach the $9 billion earnings mark. Since the pandemic in 2020, the box office only reached that total in 2023, the year of 'Barbenheimer.'

Disney's 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' is expected to provide an additional boost, opening on December 19, along with Lionsgate Films' 'Housemaid' and Paramount Pictures' 'The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants.'

Robbins believes 'Housemaid' could be a sleeper holiday hit, part of what he calls an 'interesting trio of openers' with broad audience appeal.

'To see another major female-driven movie out there during peak movie-going season is really important,' he said, noting 'Avatar' can draw a male-centered audience, and 'SpongeBob' can draw a family audience.

Movies opening on Christmas Day will also contribute, including A24's wide release of 'Marty Supreme,' Focus Features' 'Song Sung Blue,' and Sony's 'Anaconda.'

'The $9 billion mark could be a challenge to reach. That's no easy task... but I'm cautiously optimistic,' Dergarabedian concluded.
