Endometriosis Care: Uncovering Global Disparities in Guidance (2026)

A recent study has revealed a shocking disparity in the availability and quality of endometriosis guidelines across the globe. This hidden health crisis affects an estimated 190 million women worldwide, yet the support and guidance they receive varies greatly depending on their location.

The study, published in The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology, & Women's Health, highlights a significant geographical divide. While some countries, like New Zealand and Peru, have top-tier guidance from both professional societies and national governments, a staggering 27% of WHO-defined countries have no identifiable endometriosis care guidance at all.

This inequality in healthcare is a serious concern, especially when considering the impact of endometriosis on women's lives.

European countries lead the way in terms of guidance availability, while a concerning 32 African countries lack any official support despite many having relevant societies.

But here's where it gets controversial: the study also found that even within regions, there are variations. For instance, while all European countries have some level of endometriosis care guidance, the sources and quality differ.

And this is the part most people miss: the presence of an endometriosis-specific society or advocacy group doesn't always translate to official care guidance. In fact, 32 African countries with such societies still lack any official guidance.

Experts like Megan Wasson, DO, FACOG, are advocating for improved digital resources, advanced imaging, and surgical training to enhance diagnosis and care worldwide.

So, what can be done to bridge this gap? How can we ensure that all women, regardless of their location, have access to the support and guidance they need? These are questions we must ask and discuss to drive change.
