The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is considering a controversial shift in the timing of future Winter Olympics due to the impacts of climate change. Since the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics, all Winter Games have been held in February, but the IOC is now exploring the possibility of moving the event to January, which could disrupt the scheduling of World Cup races and events, as well as clash more directly with NFL and NBA schedules. This potential change is part of a broader review of Olympic Games issues under the leadership of Kirsty Coventry, the new IOC president. The IOC member overseeing the sports program review, Karl Stoss, suggests that the Winter Olympics might be brought forward to January, impacting the Paralympics as well. The Milan Cortina Paralympic Winter Games, scheduled for March 6-15, could be a precursor to this change. The IOC acknowledges that climate change poses challenges for future hosts and competition organization, with Stoss noting that March is too late due to the sun's melting effect on snow. The committee plans to meet again in June to make decisions about the Olympic reviews, including potential additions to the 2030 French Alps Winter Games, which are currently set for February 1-17, and the 2034 Utah Winter Games from February 10-26. This move could spark debate among athletes, organizers, and fans, as it challenges the traditional timing of Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
