California Baptist University (CBU) has made a difficult decision to discontinue its men's swimming and diving program at the end of the current season. This decision comes as a result of the university's strategic restructuring of its athletic programs, citing the evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics and the need for greater competitive excellence in the new Division I era. The university is transitioning into the Big West conference, which recently revived its swimming and diving championship in 2026, marking the first conference meet since 2010.
The men's swimming and diving program has seen success in recent years, with swimmers earning individual NCAA invites. Remi Fabiani and Mark Kovacsics, for instance, achieved notable performances in their respective events. Fabiani qualified for the 'B' final in the 100 freestyle, finishing 13th and contributing four points to the team. Kovacsics, a senior, recently set a season-best time in the 500 free, clocking in at 4:20.60 at the UNLV Invite.
However, the program's transition to Division I, which began in 2018, has led to financial challenges and the need to reevaluate the athletic landscape. This trend is not unique to swimming; other institutions, such as Queens University, Elon University, and UC San Diego, have faced similar decisions. Queens University, once a successful Division II program, merged with Elon University, and UC San Diego cut its diving program to focus on swimming. Similarly, UMASS Lowell transitioned to Division I in 2017 but later discontinued its women's volleyball program due to increasing costs.
The financial implications of transitioning to Division I are significant. An early 2000s study revealed that schools moving from Division II to Division I experienced a substantial increase in spending, reaching $3.7 million, while revenue only increased by $500,000. This highlights the delicate balance that universities must navigate when making such decisions, considering both the potential for enhanced athletic success and the financial burden that comes with it.
