“We’re going to do it differently this time,” Napier explained. “I’m going to hire a coordinator and work with him, but I’ll give that guy autonomy and let him call the plays. I expect us to move faster, lean into 11 personnel, and spread it out. At this level, you can find the right skill players.”
This marks a notable shift from Napier’s Florida years, where he repeatedly served as the primary play-caller. In his inaugural Florida season (2022), the Gators averaged 424.1 yards per game, ranking seventh in the SEC. In the subsequent seasons under his leadership, those numbers dipped, bottoming at about 341.3 yards per game during the 2025 portion of his Florida tenure.
Napier’s move to James Madison could be viewed as a return to form. His earlier success came during his time at Louisiana, where, over four seasons, he compiled a 40-12 record and led the Ragin’ Cajuns to four straight bowl appearances.
