Bangladeshi Films at Kolkata Festival: 'Barir Naam Shahana' & Women's Stories (2026)

A bold statement for the film industry: Bangladeshi cinema shines bright!

In a city where film festivals are a cultural beacon, Kolkata hosted a unique screening event, organized by Swayam in collaboration with the renowned Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI). This festival showcased a powerful selection of films, including Bangladesh's Oscar entry, 'Barir Naam Shahana' (A House Named Shahana), directed by Leesa Gazi.

But here's where it gets controversial... This screening marked a significant moment in the history of Bangladeshi cinema in Kolkata. It was the first feature film from Bangladesh to be shown in the city since the controversial sentencing of former PM Sheikh Hasina.

Gazi's film tells the story of a young Bangladeshi woman's journey of self-discovery and empowerment. When she marries a man in London, she faces a cultural shock and decides to take control of her life, choosing to file for divorce. It's a powerful narrative that challenges social stigma and encourages women to live authentically.

The director, Leesa Gazi, expressed her honor and the deeper meaning of cross-cultural storytelling: "When countries share stories, we share our very essence - our struggles, our hopes, and our shared humanity. It's through these exchanges that true understanding and harmony are born."

Sukanta Majumdar, the sound designer for the film and a professor at SRFTI, emphasized the importance of cultural exchange: "Irrespective of political differences, cultural exchange should never stop."

Another Bangladeshi short film, 'Laila,' directed by Baishaki Somadder, was also screened at the festival. Somadder's film explores the dreams and aspirations of a homemaker in a conservative family. She shared her emotional connection to the screening: "India has always been a meaningful part of my creative journey. This screening feels like a warm acknowledgment of the story I wanted to tell."

Samiran Datta, the Vice Chancellor of SRFTI, praised the films' alignment with Swayam's theme, while Amrita Dasgupta, director of Swayam, highlighted their focus on the cultural similarities and experiences of women across the subcontinent.

And this is the part most people miss... These screenings are not just about the films; they are a celebration of cultural exchange, a platform for powerful stories to be told, and a reminder of the universal struggles and hopes that connect us all.

So, what do you think? Is cultural exchange through film an effective way to bridge political differences? Or is it just a romantic notion? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
