A Call for Water Conservation: Anglian Water's Potential Measures for a Dry Winter
In a recent update, Anglian Water has highlighted the potential need for additional water-saving initiatives if winter brings drier conditions. This comes after an unprecedentedly dry spring and summer in the East of England, with rainfall levels at an all-time low since records began in 1899.
The region experienced a significant rainfall deficit from February to August, resulting in lower-than-expected reservoir and groundwater levels by mid-December, despite heavy rainfall in November. However, the company assures that current water supplies are secure, with dedicated teams working tirelessly to utilize every drop of winter rainfall to replenish these sources.
The Impact of Dry Conditions
November's rainfall brought some relief, with levels reaching 175% of the usual average across the region. December also saw a good amount of rain. Yet, larger reservoirs and groundwater sources require more time to recover from prolonged dry spells. The exceptional dryness meant that even with November's rainfall, the ground only recently became wet enough for groundwater sources to increase.
These sources were at critically low levels due to the record-breaking hot and dry conditions experienced during spring and summer.
Potential Challenges Ahead
If dry conditions persist into the latter half of spring and summer, Anglian Water may face a reduced water supply for the warmer months. To address this, the company plans to intensify its efforts by deploying more personnel to tackle leaks, rolling out smart water meters, and improving its pipeline infrastructure to transport water from wetter areas to those in need.
A spokesperson emphasized that further actions would be taken if drier conditions continued over winter. They urged customers to play their part by conserving water wherever possible, suggesting a 'little less' usage wherever feasible.
Anglian Water has published several tips and guidelines to help customers save water during autumn and winter.
